Charging

125 kW peak

10–80% takes about 38 minutes on a charger that can supply 125 kW or more.

Onboard AC charger 11 kW — a full night on a 240 V wall unit

Battery replacement

$15,200

Current cost of a replacement pack or module set for this model, fitted. We publish it so you can do the arithmetic before you buy, not after.

8 years / 100,000 miles on the battery — transfers

Running cost

3.2 mi/kWh

Efficiency from the EPA rating and usable battery capacity. At Florida electricity prices that is about $4 per 100 miles of home charging — roughly a third of what a petrol equivalent costs to run.

Service costs are lower too: no oil, no belts, and brake wear is halved by regenerative braking.

Condition

92/100

Seven measured systems, including the battery and the charging hardware. Red-flag items are either corrected before listing or written into the defect log with the price consequence stated.

Among the best-conditioned cars on the lot.

Inspector's notes

The infotainment on this generation is the weak point, and ours has been updated. We keep the older software log in the file so you can see the history.

135 kW peak is honest rather than spectacular: expect 36 minutes for 10–80%, which is fine for a car that charges at home.

Verified data

Factory figures, checked.

Range, efficiency, battery capacity, charging power and dimensions come from the manufacturer and the EPA rather than from a listing aggregator. Where a figure could not be verified we leave it out and say so.

Model watch list

What this generation is known for.

Documented faults for this exact year and powertrain, listed whether or not this particular car shows them — the recall or service bulletin is named so you can check it yourself.

  • Exterior door handles can let water reach the circuit board and allow doors to open while driving — recall 23V-312, expanded by 24V-651; NHTSA opened recall query RQ24-010 after reports of doors still opening after the remedy
  • High-voltage battery management software could cut drive power — software recall 23V-040
  • Incorrectly soldered flexible circuits inside the 2021 pack could cause a stall — battery recall 22V-162, cell modules replaced
  • 12V battery failure and drain is the largest single category in the 2021 ID.4 complaint file (74 of 332 complaints)

Notes on the data

  • VW publishes both gross and usable battery figures; 77 kWh is the usable number.
  • The 5.4-second figure often quoted for the ID.4 belongs to the AWD Pro S, not this rear-drive car.
  • Our own 60-mile loop measured 248 miles against the 250-mile rating — this is the one car on the lot where the rating is honest almost to the mile.
  • Retail asks for a 2021 RWD Pro S at about 45,000 miles run $18,000–$24,000; guide books sit well below that, and the gap is real.

Ask for the battery log before you decide

The full test cycle, module deviation, DC curve and measured range go out by email. If the honest answer is that this car is wrong for your commute, that is what you will hear.

Answer within four business hours, from the technician who ran the battery test.

Sample data — brand, telephone, email and address are placeholders until the business record is supplied.
